Staying Cool By Checking Your AC

Staying Cool By Checking Your AC

With the first hot days of summer coming up, it is important to make sure your air conditioner is working optimally. Spending a little time checking on your AC will not only help you stay cool, but also save you money on electric bills. Follow these few tips to help you stay cool this summer. Remove Any Cover Is your AC unit outside? Many households own AC units that reside outside, meaning they cover them in the winter months to keep snow off and forget to remove the cover in the spring. This cover needs to come off when the machine is in use, as extra weight on the machine will cause strain and a loss in efficiency. In fact, any obstruction should be cleared away from the AC. With outside units, this means sticks, bushes or dirt getting in the way of the ventilation. Simply clearing the way will help the unit operate more efficiently. Replace the Filter Every AC unit, whether outdoors or indoors, has a filter. Each day these filters pick up more debris than you would imagine. Extra debris in the filter will eventually cause the filter to tear, releasing debris into the system causing the machine to work less efficiently. Experts recommend that a filter should be changed monthly in peak seasons. Contact The Barton Boys with any questions on how to replace your AC filter. Clean the Inside The inside of the AC unit should not be neglected. Simply using a soft brush or vacuum on the inside of the unit will help the unit stay in good shape. The water pan is...
Dirty Furnace Filter? The Barton Boys Can Help!

Dirty Furnace Filter? The Barton Boys Can Help!

Do You Have a Dirty Furnace Filter? Summer is the time of year when your air conditioning unit works tirelessly to combat the heat.  One of the easiest and most efficient ways to keep your AC running smoothly is with a new, fresh filter.  Almost every central air system has a filter and its job is to remove particles from the air and keep your duct system clean. At Barton Boys, we notice that summer is the time when a large number of our calls are related to dirty furnace filters.  When air can’t get through your furnace and across your coil, the refrigeration will freeze the coil solid and this will cause reduced airflow or luke-warm air coming out of your registers.  In some cases, it restricts airflow all together. Have you noticed the copper lines coming from your outdoor condensing unit have frosted or frozen?  If this happens, you are past due for a filter replacement.  Replace your filter and turn your AC system to ‘off’ and turn the furnace fan setting from ‘auto’ to ‘on’ for 6-8 hours.  This should allow the coils to defrost (it is normal for water to appear around the base of your furnace during this process).  Do NOT turn the furnace to ‘heat’ because this may cause severe damage.  Once it has thawed, switch the system back to AC. If a situation like this occurs again, you might have a low refrigeration charge.  Instead of trying to fix the problem yourself, call The Barton Boys for maintenance service.  We have seen this happen numerous times and can fix the problem in...
Prepare Your Air Conditioner For Summer

Prepare Your Air Conditioner For Summer

How to Prepare Your Air Conditioner for Summer It’s never too early to start preparing your home for warm weather!  When the temperatures start climbing, you’ll want your air conditioner to be functioning in top condition.  The Barton Boys have years of experience in the industry and are ready to help prepare your AC.  We recommend you take these steps now to ensure your air conditioning system is in tiptop shape when the summer heat starts to swelter! Thoroughly Clean Your System One of the easiest steps you can take to prepare your air conditioning unit or furnace is by replacing the filter in your furnace or air handler.  A filter catches debris and dust to ensure your system is providing your home with clean air.  About every 3 months (or monthly during severe dust or smoke), you’ll want to clean or replace the filter so the system operates smoothly.  It’s also a good idea to clear the outside of your AC unit and condenser coils of debris, leaves and dirt. Call A Certified Technician For A Checkup Before you start tinkering with your air conditioning system, you might want to call a professional.  There are many components that make up heating and cooling units.  If you are not experienced it can be extremely dangerous (and costly) so it’s better to call a technician that is skilled and knowledgeable like those at The Barton Boys.  Rather than taking your home comfort or safety into your own hands, a professional technician will provide you with a thorough analysis and solution to your problems. Upgrade Your Cooling System How long have...
