Smart Thermostats Are A Smart Idea

With all the buzz about connected, or smart, homes Wi-Fi thermostats have been getting plenty of attention from manufacturers and homeowners. We think they’re a great idea for a couple of reasons. The major benefit is convenience. With remote access to your heating and cooling system your home will be comfortable at precisely the right time. If you’re out of town and forget to adjust the thermostat before leaving, it’s easily adjusted when you’re away and can be returned to normal just before returning home. Plus, it can alert you to system problems in your absence. The other benefit is cost savings. Many thermostats now offer an energy conservation analysis. One study showed a saving of 20% is possible. Several models will respond to your daily activity and adjust the temperature accordingly. There are a number of factors to consider including price and compatibility. We carry and install several brands and will be happy to help you upgrade your home to a smart...

Dirty Furnace Filter? The Barton Boys Can Help!

Dirty Furnace Filter? The Barton Boys Can Help!

Do You Have a Dirty Furnace Filter? Summer is the time of year when your air conditioning unit works tirelessly to combat the heat.  One of the easiest and most efficient ways to keep your AC running smoothly is with a new, fresh filter.  Almost every central air system has a filter and its job is to remove particles from the air and keep your duct system clean. At Barton Boys, we notice that summer is the time when a large number of our calls are related to dirty furnace filters.  When air can’t get through your furnace and across your coil, the refrigeration will freeze the coil solid and this will cause reduced airflow or luke-warm air coming out of your registers.  In some cases, it restricts airflow all together. Have you noticed the copper lines coming from your outdoor condensing unit have frosted or frozen?  If this happens, you are past due for a filter replacement.  Replace your filter and turn your AC system to ‘off’ and turn the furnace fan setting from ‘auto’ to ‘on’ for 6-8 hours.  This should allow the coils to defrost (it is normal for water to appear around the base of your furnace during this process).  Do NOT turn the furnace to ‘heat’ because this may cause severe damage.  Once it has thawed, switch the system back to AC. If a situation like this occurs again, you might have a low refrigeration charge.  Instead of trying to fix the problem yourself, call The Barton Boys for maintenance service.  We have seen this happen numerous times and can fix the problem in...
